How Many Lights Does My Pond Need?

As a rule of thumb, plan one submersible spotlight for every 1–1.5 metres of key viewing feature — a waterfall, weir or statue — plus perimeter lighting to define the edges. Small ponds usually need just two or three lights, while larger koi ponds and commercial fountains benefit from layered lighting: underwater uplighting, surface glow and surrounding garden light. Choose warm white (2700–3000K) for a natural look, or 4000–5000K to make blue and coloured finishes pop.

Installation & Safety Tips

Always use a low-voltage transformer rated for outdoor use, positioned above the waterline in a dry, ventilated housing.
Use transformer sockets and connections rated IP68, and keep cable runs protected in conduit where they cross garden beds.
Mount lights so lenses sit below the surface but transformers and plugs never sit in water.
Fit a residual current device (RCD) on the lighting circuit for added protection.
Clean lenses seasonally — a wipe-down removes algae so your lights stay bright.

Are pond lights safe to use underwater?

Yes — the pond and fountain lights we stock are IP68-rated, meaning they are fully sealed for continuous underwater use. Always pair them with an outdoor-rated low-voltage transformer and an RCD-protected circuit, and keep plugs, sockets and transformers above the waterline.

What colour light is best for a pond?

Warm white (2700–3000K) gives a natural, inviting glow that flatters stone, plants and fish. Cool white and RGB colour-changing lights create a more dramatic, modern effect — popular for fountains and entertaining areas. Many fixtures offer both in one unit.

How many lumens do I need for pond lighting?

For a small garden pond, 100–300 lumens per spotlight is plenty. Larger ponds, tall fountains and waterfalls generally need 300–700 lumens per fixture. Start dimmable or lower-output — underwater light looks much brighter at night than you expect.

Can pond lighting harm fish or wildlife?

Plug-in low-voltage pond light kits can usually be installed by a handy homeowner — the low-voltage side is safe DIY. However, any new outdoor power point, hardwired circuit or transformer wiring must be installed by a licensed electrician.
