Replacement swimming pool lights: find the right LED retrofit
A tired pool light can make the whole pool feel dated. Replacing it can bring back clear white illumination, add colour and reduce lighting power use — often while keeping a compatible existing fitting.
Can you replace an old pool light with LED?
Yes, many older halogen and LED pool lights can be upgraded with a purpose-designed retrofit. The right replacement depends on the existing light model, mounting or niche, pool construction, cable, transformer and controller. Identify those first; matching the face diameter or brand alone is not enough.

What is a retrofit pool light?
A retrofit light is designed to replace an existing underwater light using a compatible mounting arrangement. Depending on the model, the existing niche, cable and transformer can remain in service. A niche is the housing or fitting built into the pool wall; the light is the removable assembly that fits into or onto it.
A retrofit can be a much smaller project than rebuilding the light position. It is also different from buying a complete light-and-niche kit for a new pool. Start with the Spa Electrics replacement guide, then confirm the exact application with your pool professional.
How to identify the pool light you already have
Gather information before choosing a replacement. You can photograph the visible face, pool finish and accessible equipment labels without opening electrical equipment or removing the light yourself.
- Photograph the light in the pool. Include its shape, rim, fixing position and how far it projects from the wall.
- Look for a model reference. Old invoices, installation records or photographs may identify the light. A brand name is a starting point, not a complete compatibility check.
- Record the pool construction. Concrete, fibreglass and vinyl installations can use different mounting and sealing arrangements.
- Photograph the transformer label. The output voltage, AC or DC designation and capacity matter. Ask your service professional to check unreadable or inaccessible labels.
- Identify the controls. Note whether you use a wall switch, remote, lighting controller or pool automation app, and whether other lights share the circuit.
Send this information to Aqua Clear for replacement-light advice. Clear photos at the start can prevent buying an attractive light that needs a different niche or power supply.
Which replacement light should you consider?
The table below narrows down the relevant range. It is a starting point for identification, not a guarantee that every light in that style will fit. Check the existing model and any required adaptor against the current manufacturer guide.
| Existing fitting | Range to explore | Key check |
|---|---|---|
| Surface-mounted light projecting from the pool wall | Photon GKRX replacement | Existing mounting points, cable and model compatibility. |
| Recessed standard, mini or flush niche | Argon AGRX Retro | R1 standard, R2 mini or R3 flush variant and the required adaptor. |
| Earlier Spa Electrics EM fitting | Atom EMRX Retro | Exact EM model and installation arrangement. |
| Earlier Spa Electrics WN fitting | Quantum WNRX replacement | Exact WN model and condition of the existing niche. |
| Compatible Pentair GloBrite pencil-light niche | Titan Retro TIRX | Niche variant and specified TIRX adaptor. |
Photon GKRX: the surface-mount route
Spa Electrics' GKRX uses existing surface-light mounting locations for supported replacements. Its listed operating range is 12–32V AC. That wider range is a feature of this model; do not assume every replacement light accepts the same supply. Explore Photon replacement pool lights.
Argon AGRX: match the niche, then the variant
The AGRX family includes R1 for standard niches, R2 for mini-niches and R3 for flush-mount applications. Spa Electrics specifies R3 for concrete installations. Some existing fittings require additional parts, so confirm the full replacement combination rather than ordering “an Argon” by name. Compare the Argon AGRX options.
Atom EMRX and Quantum WNRX: replacing earlier Spa Electrics lights
For an existing Spa Electrics installation, the Atom Series Retro LED and Quantum WN Replacement are useful places to start. EMRX covers supported earlier EM fittings; WNRX covers supported WN fittings. Identification of the old lamp and housing still matters, particularly if earlier repairs changed the installation.
Titan Retro TIRX: a specific pencil-light replacement
Titan Retro TIRX is designed for compatible Pentair GloBrite and related pencil-light niches, using a purpose-built adaptor. It is a different product from the complete Titan Pencil Light for concrete-pool construction. Choose the retrofit assembly for a supported existing niche, rather than assuming the new-build kit is interchangeable.
Can you keep the existing cable and transformer?
Often, but the answer must come from the selected light's requirements and the condition of the installation. A retrofit is an opportunity to check the whole lighting circuit, especially if the old light failed repeatedly.
- Cable: re-use depends on suitable cable type, condition, size and the new connection system. A damaged cable is not made serviceable by fitting a new lamp.
- Transformer: check output type as well as voltage. AGRX and TIRX are specified for 12V AC; GKRX has a listed 12–32V AC range. A DC supply is not interchangeable with these AC requirements.
- Capacity: assess the total connected lighting load and any limits specified by the transformer and controller manufacturers.
- Connection: use the model's approved plug, seals and installation method. Avoid assuming an old connection is suitable simply because it powered the previous light.
Have a qualified installer assess the system. Arrange a licensed electrician for mains-side or hardwired transformer work. This guide helps with product selection; the current installation manual governs how the light is fitted.
Do you have to drain the pool?
Many retrofit replacements can be completed without draining. Access, light depth, available cable and the pool's sealing arrangement all affect the work. Spa Electrics specifically notes that some fibreglass and vinyl installations may need the water lowered. Let the installer decide what is appropriate before any light is removed.
Do not drain a pool just to identify a light or assume a manufacturer's fastest installation example applies to your site. Include access and any necessary repairs in the installation quote.
White, colour-changing or smart control?
Decide how you want to use the pool after dark. A white-light setting is useful when you want to see the pool clearly. Colour can change the atmosphere around the pool, but the same colour will not look identical against every interior finish.
For colour flexibility, Spa Electrics MULTIPLUS combines RGB colours with a dedicated white channel. Compatible iRIS controllers add control options; the exact light version and controller determine the functions available. Explore iRIS WiFi light control if smartphone operation, brightness adjustment or scheduling is part of your upgrade.
If keeping an existing automation system, check the model, firmware and required operating mode against the manufacturer's controller setup guides. “Colour-changing” does not automatically mean a light will synchronise with every other light or controller.
Is an LED upgrade worth it?
Lighting power is straightforward to compare: multiply wattage by operating hours. For an illustrative comparison, two 100W halogen lights running four hours use 0.8kWh. Two 12W LED lights over the same time use 0.096kWh — 88% less lighting electricity in that example. Multiply each result by your electricity tariff to estimate cost.
That calculation is not a prediction of equal light output, your household savings or the consumption of every model. Use the actual wattage of the lights you are comparing, and allow for transformer losses. LED colour choice, serviceability and the finished appearance may matter as much as the electricity saving.
What should a replacement-light quote include?
Ask for the exact light and colour version, any adaptor or rim, confirmation of cable and transformer suitability, controller setup, installation labour and any access or water-lowering work. If several lights are installed, decide whether to replace one or upgrade the group together.
Consider the view from the house and seating area, not just the light itself. Existing mounting positions can constrain a retrofit. If you want to add lights or relocate them, discuss that as a wider lighting project and browse the full LED pool light range.
Replacement swimming pool light FAQs
Can I replace just the globe?
That depends on the fitting. Some older halogen lights have replaceable globes; many LED products are supplied as sealed light assemblies. Identify the model before ordering a globe or complete replacement.
Will any replacement pool light fit?
No. Match the old model, mounting or niche, pool construction, cable and power supply. “Universal retrofit” describes a supported range of applications, not every installation without checks.
Can an LED light replace an old halogen?
Often, yes, with a compatible retrofit assembly. Start with the replacement LED range and have the old fitting and supply identified.
Should I replace one light or all of them?
A single replacement may be practical, but check whether colour and control will match the lights staying in place. Replacing the group gives you a chance to choose a consistent appearance and control arrangement.
Does a dark pool interior affect the result?
Yes. Surface colour, light positions, pool shape and the number of lights affect the appearance. Discuss the finish with your supplier rather than choosing only by wattage or a photograph of another pool.
How much will replacement cost?
The fitting, adaptor requirements, supply condition, access and installation work determine the price. Send photographs and equipment details for a quote rather than relying on a generic price per light.
